What Does A Tasman Glacier Boat Tour Cost Next To Each Mount Cook Day Trip?
Glacier Explorers is sold only by its operator, The Hermitage, and priced in New Zealand dollars on its own terms. Adults aged 15 and over pay from NZ$219, children aged 4 to 14 from NZ$99, and a family pass covering 2 adults and 2 children from NZ$576. There is no third-party comparison price for the boat anywhere, because no booking platform sells it.
The 15 Mount Cook day trips compared on this page are a different product, sold in US dollars per person. They run from $94 for the Tekapo Shuttle, 8.5 Hours up to $425.99 as a starting per-person price for Park Fees Included, Hotel Pickup, with a median of $158.47 across the set.
By start city the ranges spread out further. Day Tours From Christchurch cover $144 to $226.63 across four tours. The three Private Day Tours From Christchurch run $181.76 to $425.99. Day Tours From Queenstown sit between $150.52 and $203.91 across five options. The Lake Tekapo and Wanaka group spans $94 to $152.
So the two price tags buy different things in different currencies. The NZD boat price covers the lake trip itself: transfers, the alpine walk and around one hour on the water. The USD day-trip prices cover the road journey to Aoraki / Mount Cook and back, with inclusions varying by tour. Anyone planning both will pay the operator for the boat and a booking page for the day trip, as two separate purchases.

What The Prices Show
The cheapest trip in the set is the Tekapo Shuttle, 8.5 Hours at $94 per person, and it carries real weight behind that price: 441 reviews. It is a shuttle-based day tour, pairing a Hooker Valley walk with a Tasman Glacier viewpoint walk across an 8.5 hour day; the booking page does not state a guide.
At the other end of the volume scale, Dedicated Minibus, Hotel Pickup from Christchurch costs from $144 and holds the most reviews of any trip here: 658, at a 4.8 rating. It runs 13 hours with pickup and drop-off, a 150 minute free-time window at Aoraki / Mount Cook, lunch, and a walk to view Tasman Glacier.
Private Tours And Transfers
The three private tours from Christchurch state a starting per-person price that falls as the group grows, from $181.76 to $425.99. They are priced for one party alone rather than shared seats.
Two one-way transfers route through Mount Cook rather than returning to their start: One-Way Transfer to Queenstown at $226.63 and One-Way Transfer to Tekapo at $203.91. They suit travellers building an itinerary rather than a loop.
Cancellation
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start is stated on all 15 tours. The cut-off for any given trip is on its booking page.

The decision point is volume versus privacy: the heavily reviewed shared trips near the $158.47 median, or a private van where the per-person price moves with group size.
Which Tasman Glacier Boat Tour Plan Fits Your Start City, Budget And Time?
Three taps narrow 15 day trips down to a workable shortlist. The first selects a departure area: Christchurch, Queenstown, Lake Tekapo or Wanaka. The second sets a price band. The third picks a group style, shared small-group travel or a private tour for one party.
Each combination rebuilds the shortlist from the same 15 trips, from the $94 Tekapo shuttle to the $425.99 private glacier-walks tour, with the exact from-price, review count and duration for each match shown as you go.
The Glacier Explorers boat is not part of the picker. It is not sold on any booking platform, so there is no shared pool of products to filter: the boat is booked separately and directly with the operator, The Hermitage. The picker works purely on the road trips that get you to Aoraki / Mount Cook; what you do in the village, on the walks or on the lake, is arranged independently.
Treat the shortlist as a first cut. The questions below cover how to narrow it further once two or three candidates remain.
A starting shortlist of top-rated picks. Answer a question or two and it rebuilds around your trip.
After the shortlist shortens, a few checks separate the finalists.
Start City And Budget
Christchurch accounts for 7 of the 15 trips counting the private tours, Queenstown 5, Lake Tekapo 2 and Wanaka 1. Prices run from $94 to $425.99 per person, so a budget alone can cut the field sharply: everything under $160 rules out the private tours and both one-way transfers.
A Walk To View The Glacier
9 of the 15 trips state a walk to view Tasman Glacier and the lake. That is a viewing walk from a viewpoint, not the boat, and the remaining 6 either do not state it or leave walks to your own free time.
Free Time At Mount Cook
6 trips state a free-time window at Aoraki / Mount Cook: about 2.5 hours on four of them, 3.5 hours on Alpine Centre Entry Included, and 2 hours on From Wānaka, 10 Hours. Where free time matters for your plans, favour the trips that state a figure.
The Boat, Separately
None of the 15 includes Glacier Explorers. If the lake trip is the goal, the boat is its own booking with the operator, timed against whatever free time the day trip allows.
How Does The Tasman Glacier Boat Tour Work, From Check-In To The Jetty?

Booking Before You Arrive
Bookings for Glacier Explorers run through the operator only: The Hermitage, by phone or email. The operator says demand is high and recommends pre-booking, ideally when booking accommodation. The page is plain that bookings are essential.
Check-In At The Hermitage
Check in at the Activities Centre on the ground floor of the Hermitage Hotel, 30 minutes before the scheduled departure. Departures run through the morning and afternoon; confirm times with the operator when booking.
The Bus To The Tasman Valley
From the hotel a bus carries guests on a short drive from the village into the Tasman Valley, finishing at the Blue Lakes car park.
The 1.5 Km Alpine Walk
From the car park the route is a 1.5 km walk each way through the National Park, completed in about 25 minutes. The operator describes small hills up and down, an uneven surface and loose rocks, with a relatively steep slope down to the lake at the end. Guests must be fit enough to complete the 1.5 km to the lake within 25 minutes.
On The Lake And Back
Boarding is from the Tasman Lake jetty, with about one hour on the water. The return follows the same track and bus back. The whole trip, including transfers, the alpine walk and the lake time, runs about 2 hours 45 minutes.
The boat is run and sold by the operator, not through this site. Operator prices: Adult (aged 15+) from NZ$219; Child (aged 4 to 14) from NZ$99; Family pass (2 adults + 2 children) from NZ$576.
Fitness And Age
The minimum age is 4 years old; the operator's FAQ is explicit that a 3-year-old cannot go. Children priced 4 to 14, adults 15 and up. The fitness requirement is specific: guests must complete the 1.5 km walk to the lake within 25 minutes, over an uneven track with loose rocks and a relatively steep slope down to the lake at the end. The walk is 1.5 km each way.
What To Wear
Warm layers and sturdy walking shoes for uneven terrain, with a waterproof jacket, sunglasses and sunscreen recommended. Additional equipment is provided where required.
Weather And Lake Conditions
The tour may be cancelled for weather and lake conditions. The decision sits with the Glacier Explorers Head Guide, taken just before each trip. If the operator cancels, an alternative trip time or a full refund is offered. The operator also runs a live webcam of conditions on its website, worth a look before you set out.

On Icebergs
The operator's own words: "Icebergs, calvings and rollovers cannot be guaranteed, but are a wonderful bonus." Quantity and size vary with glacier activity. Conditions permitting, guides often retrieve glacier ice from the lake so guests can see and handle it.
Read the cancellation terms when booking, and confirm season dates with the operator.
Does Any Day Trip Include The Tasman Glacier Boat Tour?

The Short Answer: No
None of the 15 day trips compared here includes the Glacier Explorers boat. Zero of 15 booking pages list it as an inclusion. The closest any trip comes is Alpine Centre Entry Included from Queenstown, whose booking page names the boat only as an optional paid extra you could arrange for your free time, alongside what the trip itself covers.
Why That Matters
The boat is sold only by its operator, The Hermitage, by phone or email. No booking platform carries it, so no day trip can bundle it, and any promise of a combined lake cruise in a road tour should be read carefully. Two separate purchases are the only route to both.
Which Trips State Free Time
6 of the 15 trips state a free-time window at Aoraki / Mount Cook. Four state about 2.5 hours: the two Christchurch small-group trips Dedicated Minibus, Hotel Pickup and Lunch Included, the private Park Fees Included, Hotel Pickup tour, and the Tekapo Carbon Neutral, Small Group. Alpine Centre Entry Included from Queenstown states 3.5 hours. From Wānaka, 10 Hours states 2 hours.
That window is what you would set the boat against, remembering the boat itself takes about 2 hours 45 minutes plus check-in.
| Trip | Starts In | Time At Aoraki / Mount Cook | Includes The Boat | Against About 3 Hours 15 Minutes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tasman Glacier boat tour (operator) | Hermitage, Aoraki / Mount Cook | 30 minutes check-in plus about 2 hours 45 minutes | Booked direct | The yardstick |
| Dedicated Minibus, Hotel Pickup | Christchurch | About 2.5 hours | No | Shorter |
| Lunch Included | Christchurch | About 2.5 to 3 hours | No | Shorter |
| Park Fees Included, Hotel Pickup | Christchurch | About 2.5 hours | No | Shorter |
| Alpine Centre Entry Included | Queenstown | About 3.5 hours | No, named as an optional extra | Longer, on paper |
| Carbon Neutral, Small Group | Lake Tekapo | About 2.5 hours | No | Shorter |
| From Wānaka, 10 Hours | Wanaka | About 2 hours | No | Shorter |
Reading The Free-Time Table
On paper the boat needs about 195 minutes: 30 minutes of check-in plus about 2 hours 45 minutes of trip. Only one day trip states a free-time window longer than that figure. Alpine Centre Entry Included states 3.5 hours at Aoraki / Mount Cook, 210 minutes against the boat's 195 on paper.
The other five trips with stated free time fall short of the paper figure. Four of them state 150 minutes: Dedicated Minibus, Hotel Pickup, Lunch Included, Park Fees Included, Hotel Pickup and Carbon Neutral, Small Group. From Wānaka, 10 Hours states 120 minutes.
Why The Paper Figure Is Optimistic
The 195 minute figure runs from check-in back to the Hermitage, and it includes the bus transfer to the Tasman Valley, the walk and the lake time. It says nothing about the time needed to get from a day-trip drop-off point to the Hermitage check-in. Before booking either product, check the timing with both the day trip and the operator: the day trip controls when you arrive and leave the village, and the operator controls the departure times.

Walks Are Not The Boat
Where a day trip states a walk to view Tasman Glacier, that is a viewing walk of the glacier and lake from a viewpoint. It is not the boat trip, and it does not reach the lake shore.
Which Day Trips From Christchurch Fit A Tasman Glacier Boat Tour Day?

Four day tours run from Christchurch to Aoraki / Mount Cook, with from-prices from $144 to $226.63 per person. All four are guided, all four state free cancellation, and none of them includes the Glacier Explorers boat trip, which is booked separately and directly with the operator, The Hermitage.
Hotel pickup is stated on three of the four, and lunch is included on all four. A walk to view Tasman Glacier, a viewing walk of the glacier and lake rather than the boat trip, is stated on two. Two tours state about 150 minutes of free time at Aoraki / Mount Cook.
The featured trip in this group is Dedicated Minibus, Hotel Pickup, from $144 per person. It carries a 4.8 rating across 658 reviews, runs 13 hours with pickup and drop-off, and gives you about 2.5 hours of free time at Aoraki / Mount Cook. It includes a walk to view Tasman Glacier, hotel pickup from selected central Christchurch hotels, lunch with a chicken or vegetarian choice advised at booking, bottled water, light snacks, Wi-Fi on board and an air-conditioned minibus. Its stated exclusions note that walks in Mount Cook National Park are not guided.
“Lynnette was a wonderful guide on this tour of Mt. Cook. The day was beautiful for the hikes around the area.”
Christchurch is the longest starting point of the four categories. The operator says to allow 4 hours 15 minutes to drive to the Hermitage, and DOC puts the drive at 4.5 hours, which is why these tours run 13 to 14 hours door to door. If a boat trip is part of the plan, check the day's timing with both the tour and the operator before booking either.

The One-Way Option
One tour in this group is not a round trip. One-Way Transfer to Queenstown, from $226.63 per person, runs 14 hours from Christchurch and finishes in Queenstown, which suits travellers building a one-way South Island itinerary. It is guided, includes lunch with dietary requirements advised at booking, allows one large and one small bag per person, has Wi-Fi on board, and states free cancellation. It holds a 4.7 rating across 128 reviews. Its meeting point is the Christchurch Bus Interchange on Lichfield Street, right in the city centre.

The Other Two Round Trips
Beyond the featured Dedicated Minibus, Hotel Pickup at $144, two more round trips appear in this category. Lunch Included runs from $152 per person, carries a 4.7 rating across 467 reviews, lasts 13 hours, and states 150 minutes of free time at Aoraki / Mount Cook, with a range of 2.5 to 3 hours, plus a walk to view Tasman Glacier, hotel pickup from central Christchurch, a pre-ordered picnic lunch from a local bakery, a Mercedes Sprinter with air conditioning and a small group capped at 11 guests. Small Group, Lunch Included runs from $169.83 per person, rates 4.8 across 252 reviews over 13 hours, and states hotel pickup from select locations, lunch with dietary requirements advised at booking, and a fully guided small group format.
The Decision Point
Guide, lunch and cancellation terms are near-uniform here, so the real choice is round trip versus one-way, and whether a stated 150-minute stop covers what a separate boat booking would demand.
Private Day Tours From Christchurch To Aoraki / Mount Cook

Three private day tours run from Christchurch to Aoraki / Mount Cook, with starting prices from $181.76 to $425.99 per person. Each is priced as a private booking for one party, so the per-person figure falls as the group grows. All three state free cancellation, though the cut-off differs, so read the terms on the booking page.
The data states a guide on all three tours. Lunch is not included on Park Fees Included, Hotel Pickup or Meet and Greet, City Centre; for WiFi On Board, Drinks Included lunch is not stated. Hotel pickup is stated for Park Fees Included, Hotel Pickup only. All three include the walk to view Tasman Glacier, the viewing walk above Tasman Lake. Free time at Aoraki / Mount Cook is stated only for Park Fees Included, Hotel Pickup, at 150 minutes.
Review counts sit at 14, 7 and 15, too thin for broad comparisons, though Meet and Greet, City Centre carries a 4.9 rating across 15 reviews. Durations run long: 13 hours for Park Fees Included, Hotel Pickup and WiFi On Board, Drinks Included, 13 hours 30 minutes for Meet and Greet, City Centre.

A private day is the only format here where one party sets the pace with its own guide and vehicle. None of these trips includes the Glacier Explorers boat, which is booked separately and directly with the operator, The Hermitage.

The Other Two Tours In This Category
Park Fees Included, Hotel Pickup runs 13 hours from $425.99 per person, with a professional guide, hotel pickup and drop-off, transport in an air-conditioned late model Mercedes Benz van, national park fees, bottled water, approximately 2.5 hours of free time in Mount Cook National Park, and about 150 minutes of that free time at Aoraki / Mount Cook. Lunch is excluded, payable on arrangement. It has 14 reviews, too few for a star claim.
WiFi On Board, Drinks Included runs 13 hours from $181.76 per person, with bottled water, coffee or tea, WiFi on board, private transport and an in-person guide. Fees and taxes are excluded. It has 7 reviews, also too few for a star claim.

Meet and Greet, City Centre runs 13 hours 30 minutes from $195.96 per person and meets at Novotel Christchurch Cathedral Square, 52 Cathedral Square. It rates 4.9 across 15 reviews.
One Decision Point
Guide depth is not the gap here: all three state a guide, and the $425.99 tour also states hotel pickup, which the cheaper two leave to the booking page.
Which Day Trips From Queenstown Fit A Tasman Glacier Boat Tour Day?

Five day tours run from Queenstown to Aoraki / Mount Cook, with from-prices from $150.52 to $203.91 per person. All five state a guide on the booking page: Alpine Centre Entry Included (hosted by a local guide), Small Group, 13 Hours, Small Group, 12 Hours, Via Wānaka and Pukaki and One-Way Transfer to Tekapo. Hotel pickup is stated on Alpine Centre Entry Included, both Small Group trips and One-Way Transfer to Tekapo, while Via Wānaka and Pukaki does not state it. Lunch is included on one trip only, Via Wānaka and Pukaki, where it is collected by the guide at the Wānaka stop. That same trip is also the only one in this group that states a walk to view Tasman Glacier and the lake.

Free time at Aoraki / Mount Cook is stated on a single tour here: Alpine Centre Entry Included, with 210 minutes in Mount Cook Village. That matters against the Glacier Explorers boat trip, which needs about 195 minutes on paper, 30 minutes of check-in plus about 2 hours 45 minutes, a figure that starts and ends at the Hermitage, so add the time from your drop-off to check-in. Alpine Centre Entry Included is the only Queenstown trip whose stated free time exceeds that. Its booking page names the boat only as an optional paid extra; it does not include it. No trip in this group includes the boat, which is booked separately and directly with the operator.
The drive from Queenstown to the Hermitage is 3 hours 15 minutes to 3 hours 30 minutes per the operator, or about 3.5 hours per DOC. Confirm your arrival window with both the day trip and the operator before relying on a boat departure.
All 5 Day Tours From Queenstown on one page →

One-Way Transfer To Tekapo
The one trip in this category without a card is One-Way Transfer to Tekapo, from $203.91 per person. It is a one-way transfer, not a round trip: nine hours from Queenstown to Lake Tekapo with a guide, hotel pickup from select locations, water and snacks, and space for one large and one small bag per person. It carries a 4.5 rating over 26 reviews. Lunch is not included, with chances to buy food along the way, and there is no restroom on board.
Because it ends in Lake Tekapo, it suits travellers building their own route north rather than returning to Queenstown the same evening. It does not state free time at Aoraki / Mount Cook, a walk to view Tasman Glacier, or a stop built around the boat, and it does not include the Glacier Explorers trip.
“Mt. Cook was stunning. Grant, the driver’s commentary was excellent. As a retired teacher and geologist his wealth of information was fascinating.”
Free Cancellation And Timing
All five Queenstown tours state free cancellation, with cut-offs that differ from trip to trip, so read the terms at booking. Durations range from 9 hours on the transfer to 13 hours on Small Group, 13 Hours and Via Wānaka and Pukaki. The choice comes down to whether 210 stated minutes at Mount Cook Village on Alpine Centre Entry Included is worth more to you than a guide and a glacier viewpoint walk on Via Wānaka and Pukaki, or a one-way seat toward Tekapo.
Quotes are copied verbatim from reviews on each tour's own page. Nothing here is collected or edited by this site, which only chooses which lines to show.
“Great trip. The scenery around Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki is spectacular. The short walk to the lake to see the Tasman glacier view was well worth it.”
“The views throughout the trip were amazing and our tour guide Jonathan brought such joyous energy. Despite the heavy overcast, Mount Cook was spectacular.”
“Definitely worth to go for a short hike at Mt Cook and Tasman glacier. Magnificent view and unforgetable experience. Our guide did a professional job.”
“William was our guide for the day and he was fantastic.”
Day Tours From Lake Tekapo And Wanaka To Aoraki / Mount Cook

Three tours make up this group, with from-prices from $94 to $152 per person, all starting from Lake Tekapo or Wanaka. Every one of them states free cancellation, with cut-offs that differ, so read the terms on the booking page before paying.
The cheapest here is Tekapo Shuttle, 8.5 Hours at $94, rated 4.8 across 441 reviews. It runs 8.5 hours from the meeting point at Four Square Tekapo, 22 Rapuwai Lane, and includes a Hooker Valley walk plus a Tasman Glacier viewpoint walk. Water, snacks, Wi-Fi, a 240v outlet, a USB charger and snow spikes when snowy are provided; lunch is not. A guide is not stated on the booking page.

Carbon Neutral, Small Group costs from $152, runs 5 hours, and holds a 4.4 rating over 58 reviews. It is the only tour in this group that states hotel pickup, and it includes lunch, pre-ordered from Fairlie Bakehouse, with bottled water and Kiwi snacks. Guests get 150 minutes of free time at Aoraki / Mount Cook, and a walk to view Tasman Glacier is stated.
From Wānaka, 10 Hours starts at $139 from the Wanaka isite Visitor Information Centre, 103 Ardmore Street. It has no reviews yet, runs 10 hours, includes lunch, and gives 120 minutes of free time in the village. A Tasman Glacier viewing walk is stated on its booking page too.
Lake Tekapo is 1 hour 30 minutes from the village by car. None of these three trips includes the Glacier Explorers boat, which is booked separately and directly with the operator.
All 3 Day Tours From Lake Tekapo And Wanaka on one page →
All three tours in this category appear as cards above, so nothing here is hidden in the comparison table alone. The differences between them come down to duration, price and how much time you get in the national park.
Durations And Prices Compared
“Instead of flying from Christchurch to Queenstown and then taking a tour another day to Mt Cook this is an amazing way to do both on the same day. Great guide on small bus.”
The Tekapo option is the cheapest at $94 and runs 8.5 hours; the Wānaka tour is the longest at 10 hours. From Wānaka, 10 Hours runs 10 hours, from $139. Carbon Neutral, Small Group is the shortest at 5 hours and the dearest at from $152 per person.
Free Cancellation
Free cancellation is stated on all three tours. The cut-off windows differ from trip to trip, so check the exact terms on each booking page rather than assuming one window covers the group.
Time At Aoraki / Mount Cook
Carbon Neutral, Small Group states 150 minutes of free time at Aoraki / Mount Cook. From Wānaka, 10 Hours states 120 minutes. The Tekapo shuttle does not state a free time figure, though it does state both a Hooker Valley walk and a Tasman Glacier viewpoint walk.
The Decision Point
If a fixed 150 minutes in the village matters, because you want to fit in a viewpoint walk and still eat, the Carbon Neutral trip is the one that spells that out. If a lower price and a longer day matter more, the $94 shuttle covers two walks on foot for less than any other tour in this group.
Where Does The Tasman Glacier Boat Tour Start, And Where Do The Day Trips Meet?

The Glacier Explorers boat trip begins in Aoraki / Mount Cook Village. Check in at the Activities Centre on the ground floor of the Hermitage Hotel, 30 minutes before the scheduled departure. The map marks the Hermitage as the gateway, along with the Tasman Valley car park where the boat walk starts, the Tasman Lake jetty area where guests board, and the Tasman Glacier and lake viewpoint used by nine of the 15 day trips.
Day trips meet in their start city. In Christchurch, One-Way Transfer to Queenstown meets at the Christchurch Bus Interchange on Lichfield Street, and Meet and Greet, City Centre meets at Novotel Christchurch Cathedral Square. In Queenstown, three tours meet at The Station on the corner of Shotover and Camp Streets. Tekapo Shuttle, 8.5 Hours meets at Four Square Tekapo, 22 Rapuwai Lane, and From Wānaka, 10 Hours meets at the Wanaka I-SITE Visitor Information Centre, 103 Ardmore Street. Most of the remaining trips state hotel pickup in their start city; check the booking page for the rest.

“This was an amazing experience! It worked out perfectly to sightsee and get a ride to Queenstown. Our guides were both fabulous, and very informative.”
Driving To The Tasman Valley Car Park
DOC gives drive times to the Tasman Valley car park of 10 minutes from the village, 50 minutes from Twizel and 1 hour 30 minutes from Tekapo. From the village, take State Highway 80 towards Twizel; Tasman Valley Road is the second on the left after Hooker Valley Road. The car park is free for cars and campervans. It is very busy from November to April, and its toilets close in winter. Snow can close State Highway 80, so check road conditions before setting out.
Drive Times To The Hermitage
The Hermitage allows 4 hours 15 minutes from Christchurch, 3 hours 15 minutes to 3 hours 30 minutes from Queenstown, 2 hours 30 minutes from Wanaka, and 3 hours 45 minutes to 4 hours from Dunedin. DOC gives 3.5 hours from Queenstown and 4.5 hours from Christchurch as park drive times. The village has a self-service card-only fuel pump, and there are no shops or convenience stores, so fill up and stock up beforehand. The nearest supermarkets are in Twizel, one hour away, and Tekapo, one hour 30 minutes away.

Two Operator Statements On The Season
The operator's experience page says Glacier Explorers will now be open year-round. The Hermitage FAQ gives a winter closure for Glacier Explorers, though the operator's own statements differ; see the season guide for details and confirm dates directly. Both statements sit on the operator's own site, so the practical step is to confirm the dates of a planned visit with the operator before booking anything else around it.
Weather Cancellations
The trip may be cancelled for weather and lake conditions. The decision is made by the Glacier Explorers Head Guide just before each departure, which means a trip can stand or fall on the day itself. If the operator cancels, an alternative trip time or a full refund is offered, and the page carries a badge saying the trip is fully refundable if cancelled due to weather. The operator also runs a live webcam, so conditions on the mountain can be checked ahead of time.

What The Season Change Means For Planning
Because the operator itself gives two different season answers, treat neither as settled. Bookings can be made by phone or email, and the operator recommends pre-booking due to high demand, ideally when booking accommodation. If a trip falls in winter, ask the operator directly whether boats will be running on those dates. There is no need to pick a month on faith when a phone call settles it.
Winter Lake Ice And The Road
DOC notes lake ice in winter at the viewpoint, which is consistent with the Hermitage FAQ saying the lake freezes over. No claim is made here that the boat runs in July; the two season statements in the section above are the only guide, and the operator confirms dates. DOC also says access may be limited from June to September by snow, and snow can close State Highway 80. In winter, check road conditions before travelling and read the Hermitage road-closure policy if a booking is affected.

Seeing Ice From The View Track Instead
The Tasman Glacier View Track is a different walk from the boat walk. It is 1.5 km return with 300+ steps, takes about 30 minutes return, and climbs to a viewpoint over Tasman Lake and the glacier at the lake's far end. DOC says icebergs appear in summer and lake ice in winter. The track is free, needs no booking and does not involve the fitness requirement of the boat trip, though it is still a short, steep climb on steps.
Day Trips And Weather
Day trips to Aoraki / Mount Cook also depend on road and weather conditions. Free cancellation is stated on 15 of 15 tours, with cut-offs that differ between trips, so read the weather and cancellation terms on each booking page before relying on them for a winter visit.
What Is Included, And What To Bring For The Tasman Glacier Boat Tour?
Adults (aged 15 and over) pay from NZ$219, children aged 4 to 14 from NZ$99, and a family pass covering 2 adults and 2 children from NZ$576. These are the operator's own prices, set by The Hermitage, and bookings are made directly with it by phone or email rather than through any booking page.

What The Operator Says To Bring
Warm layers come first on the packing list, along with sturdy walking shoes for uneven terrain. A waterproof jacket is advised, and sunglasses and sunscreen are recommended. The operator adds that additional equipment is provided where required, so anything beyond your own clothing and footwear is covered on the day.
What The Price Covers
The trip runs about 2 hours 45 minutes end to end. That includes the bus transfer from the Hermitage to the Tasman Valley, the 1.5 km walk to the lake, and around one hour on the water itself. Check-in is at the Activities Centre on the ground floor of the Hermitage Hotel, 30 minutes before the scheduled departure.
Book Ahead
The operator says demand is high and recommends pre-booking, and the Hermitage FAQ goes further, suggesting you book when you book your accommodation and calling bookings essential. Confirm departure times directly with the operator when you reserve, as departures run through the morning and afternoon.

Counts Across The 15 Day Trips
Lunch is included on 7 of the 15 trips. Hotel pickup is stated on 9. A walk to view Tasman Glacier, a viewing walk of the glacier and lake rather than the boat, is stated on 9. A guide is named on 11 of the trips. Free cancellation is stated on 15 of 15, with cut-offs that differ from trip to trip, so read the terms at booking.
What Named Trips Exclude
Dedicated Minibus, Hotel Pickup notes that walks in Mount Cook National Park are not guided. Lunch Included excludes Fairlie Bakehouse pies, scenic helicopter flights and entry to the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre, each available to purchase or book separately. Small Group, 13 Hours and Small Group, 12 Hours from Queenstown both exclude lunch and guided hikes, with walks self-guided and lunch bought along the way. Via Wānaka and Pukaki excludes Alpine Centre entry and scenic flights. Park Fees Included, Hotel Pickup lists lunch as excluded, price on application. Tekapo Shuttle, 8.5 Hours excludes lunch. Meet and Greet, City Centre excludes breakfast, lunch and dinner.
One Rule To Keep Straight
None of the 15 trips includes the Glacier Explorers boat. On Queenstown's Alpine Centre Entry Included, the booking page names the boat only as an optional paid extra, still booked and paid separately with the operator.
What Has Changed At Tasman Glacier Since The Lake Formed In 1974?

Tasman Lake did not exist until 1974. The Department of Conservation states it plainly: the glacier is retreating as the climate changes, and the lake is growing rapidly as the ice melts. Before 1974 there was no lake at all, and the water body sitting at the glacier's end today keeps expanding year on year.
The glacier behind that change is Haupapa/Tasman Glacier, New Zealand's longest. DOC gives its length as 23 km, its width as up to 3 km and its area as 101 square kilometres. Near the Hochstetter Icefall the ice runs about 600 m deep, and the lower reaches are covered in rock. DOC also notes the glacier is clearly visible from the main highway at the park entrance, an unusual front-row position for ice of this scale. Aoraki / Mount Cook, which rises above it all, stands 3,724 m and is New Zealand's tallest peak.
The numbers tell the story in sequence. A lake that appeared only in 1974, a glacier still measured in tens of kilometres, and a shoreline that keeps moving as the melt continues. Every figure here comes from DOC.
- Before 1974: no Tasman Lake (DOC)
- Today: lake still growing as the glacier melts (DOC)
- View Track: 1.5 km return, 300+ steps, about 30 minutes (DOC)
The Tasman Glacier View Track
The View Track is 1.5 km return, takes about 30 minutes return and climbs more than 300 steps, with a short, steep climb to a viewpoint over Tasman Lake and the glacier at the lake's far end. DOC notes icebergs in summer and lake ice in winter at the lake below. Ten minutes of steps brings you to the first of the Blue Lakes; another five minutes reaches the viewpoint. No booking is required, and dogs are not allowed. This is a different walk from the 1.5 km boat track down to the lake jetty.
The Blue Lakes And The Hazards
The Blue Lakes, a five-minute, 500 m side trip to the first lake, were once blue but are now fed by rainwater and look green. DOC warns that Tasman Lake and the surrounding moraine rock walls have serious hazards, and to know the risks if you explore beyond the viewpoint.
If The Steps Do Not Suit
The Tasman Lake and River Track, reachable from the View Track, is 2.5 km return in about 50 minutes and serves as the alternative when the steps are unsuitable.
Latest Data, November 2026

These figures come from the tours' booking pages. They cover 15 day trips to Aoraki / Mount Cook, all 15 priced per person. The most-reviewed trip is Dedicated Minibus, Hotel Pickup from Christchurch, rated 4.8 across 658 reviews and priced from $144 per person.
The Glacier Explorers boat is priced separately by the operator in New Zealand dollars, from NZ$219 for adults, and is never part of a day trip's price. Everything below reflects what the booking pages stated for that month.
- Tours Listed1515 priced per person
- Cheapest From$94Tekapo Shuttle, 8.5 Hours
- Most Reviewed658Dedicated Minibus, Hotel Pickup
- Average Rating4.7mean of 14 tours with 5+ reviews
Per-person from-prices across the 15 trips run from $94 to $425.99, with a median of $158.47. The private tours show a starting per-person price that falls as the group grows.
None of the 15 trips includes the boat: the count is 0 of 15. Free cancellation is stated on 15 of 15, with differing cut-offs, so read it at booking. Free time at Aoraki / Mount Cook is stated on 6 of the 15.
For anyone weighing the boat against a day trip's free time, the boat needs 30 minutes of check-in plus about 2 hours 45 minutes of trip, roughly 195 minutes on paper, and the trip time already covers the bus transfer and the alpine walk to the jetty. Check the timing with both the day trip and the operator before assuming the two fit together.
Tasman Glacier Boat Tour FAQ

What Is The Tasman Glacier Boat Tour?
Glacier Explorers is a boat trip run by The Hermitage on Tasman Lake at Aoraki / Mount Cook, and the operator claims it is New Zealand's only glacier boat tour. Guests check in at the Activities Centre in the Hermitage Hotel, take a bus to the Tasman Valley, walk 1.5 km to the lake, then spend about one hour on the water. DOC's park page describes it as boat tours on the Tasman Glacier Terminal Lake. Bookings go through the operator only.
How Long Is The Boat Trip?
The operator's page and FAQ put the total at about 2 hours 45 minutes, including transfers, the alpine walk and around one hour on the lake. Check-in is at the Activities Centre in the Hermitage Hotel 30 minutes before the scheduled departure, which adds to the overall time needed on the day. The bus to the Tasman Valley is already included in that time; confirm exact timings with the operator when booking.
How Much Does The Boat Tour Cost?
Prices are set by the operator and are always quoted from: adults aged 15 and over from NZ$219, children aged 4 to 14 from NZ$99, and a family pass covering 2 adults and 2 children from NZ$576. These are the operator's own New Zealand dollar prices, and booking is direct with The Hermitage rather than through a booking platform.
Where Do You Book The Glacier Explorers Boat?
Directly with the operator only. The Hermitage runs and sells the trip through its Activities Centre, and the operator's page states that bookings can be made via phone or email only. It cannot be booked on this site or on a third-party booking platform. The operator recommends pre-booking because of high demand, and the Hermitage FAQ suggests booking ahead, ideally when booking accommodation.
Is The Boat Included In Any Mount Cook Day Trip?
No. None of the 15 day trips compared here includes the Glacier Explorers boat. One Queenstown trip, Alpine Centre Entry Included, names the boat on its booking page only as an optional paid extra, meaning it would still be booked and paid for separately with the operator. Any day trip combined with the boat means two separate bookings, and the timing of both should be checked with the day trip provider and the operator.
Can I Do The Boat On A Christchurch Day Trip?
It is tight. The boat needs 30 minutes of check-in plus about 2 hours 45 minutes, roughly 195 minutes on paper, from check-in at the Hermitage back to the Hermitage. The Christchurch trips that state free time give 150 minutes: Dedicated Minibus, Hotel Pickup, Lunch Included, and Park Fees Included, Hotel Pickup. That is shorter than the boat needs, so confirm timing with both the day trip and the operator before relying on it.
What About A Day Trip From Queenstown?
Alpine Centre Entry Included is the one Queenstown trip with stated free time long enough on paper. It allows 210 minutes at Aoraki / Mount Cook; the boat needs roughly 195 minutes for check-in and trip time, plus the time from the drop-off to the Hermitage check-in, so check the timing with both. The other Queenstown trips do not state free time. The boat is not included on any of them, so check the timing with the day trip and the operator before booking.
How Far Is The Walk To The Boat?
From the Blue Lakes car park it is a 1.5 km alpine walk each way through the National Park, about 25 minutes each direction. The track has small hills up and down, an uneven surface, loose rocks, and a relatively steep slope down to the lake at the end. Guests must be fit enough to complete the 1.5 km walk to the lake within 25 minutes. It is separate from the DOC View Track.
Is There A Minimum Age For The Boat?
Yes, four years. The operator's FAQ states a 3-year-old cannot go. Children priced at 4 to 14 pay from NZ$99, and adults aged 15 and over pay from NZ$219. The FAQ describes the trip as suitable for families. Bookings are made directly with the operator, and age details can be confirmed with it at the time of booking.
Will I See Icebergs?
Not guaranteed. The operator says icebergs, calvings and rollovers cannot be guaranteed, but are a wonderful bonus, and that their quantity and size vary with glacier activity. Conditions permitting, guides often retrieve glacier ice from the lake so guests can see and handle it. Nothing about icebergs can be promised in advance.
What Happens If Weather Cancels The Trip?
The tour may be cancelled for weather and lake conditions, with the decision made by the Glacier Explorers Head Guide just before each trip. The operator offers an alternative trip time or a full refund in those circumstances, and its page carries a fully refundable if cancelled due to weather badge. Read the full cancellation terms when booking with the operator.
Is The Boat Open In Winter?
Winter lake ice can close the boat, so check winter dates with the operator. Glacier Explorers now describes the trip as open year-round, but closure windows can change, so confirm before you plan a winter visit. Confirm the dates of any planned visit with the operator before booking.
What Should I Wear For The Boat Trip?
The operator advises warm layers and sturdy walking shoes for the uneven terrain, and recommends a waterproof jacket, sunglasses and sunscreen. It states that additional equipment is provided where required. Given the 1.5 km walk on an uneven track with loose rocks and a steep slope at the end, footwear matters as much as clothing for the lake portion of the trip.
Which Day Trip Gives The Most Free Time At Mount Cook?
Alpine Centre Entry Included, from Queenstown, states 210 minutes, about 3.5 hours, the longest of any trip compared. Four trips state about 2.5 hours: the two Christchurch small-group trips, the private Park Fees Included, Hotel Pickup tour, and the Tekapo Carbon Neutral small group. From Wānaka, 10 Hours states 120 minutes. None of these includes the boat, which needs roughly 195 minutes on paper.
How Much Do The Day Trips Cost?
Per-person from-prices run from $94 to $425.99 in USD, with a median of $158.47 across the 15 trips. Tekapo Shuttle, 8.5 Hours is the cheapest at $94, and Park Fees Included, Hotel Pickup is the dearest at $425.99 as a starting per-person price that falls as the group grows. Free cancellation is stated on all 15 trips, with differing cut-offs, so read the terms at booking.
